The Harbor Fund

The Harbor School is unique in its approach to early childhood and in its ability to meet the unique learning needs of each of the children enrolled here. Your tax-deductible contribution through the Harbor Fund enables us to create an environment where our children can imagine without limits and discover without borders, to inspire and be inspired, to connect to an ever-changing world and to innovate their way into a future of their own design.

There are various ways in which you can donate to the Harbor Fund. Click on the link to the left.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Harbor Fund?

The Harbor Fund is a fund of unrestricted contributions from parents, board members, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Harbor that is used to defray the extra costs of a Harbor School education that tuition revenue alone does not cover.  The difference between what we charge for tuition and what it costs to educate a child at Harbor each year is about 12% per student. This difference between tuition and cost means that we have to raise funds each year to meet our operational needs. We seek to meet this need through various means, the most important of which is your tax-deductible contribution to The Harbor Fund, the School’s annual fund effort. The Harbor Fund supports all dimensions of school life, including faculty and staff salaries and benefits, curriculum materials and enhancements, professional development programs for faculty, and improvements to the facility.  Perhaps most importantly, it allows us to sustain a low student to faculty ratio of 5:1.

Why should I give to the Harbor Fund when I already pay so much in tuition?

Tuition revenue alone does not cover the cost of a Harbor education.  Like other independent schools, Harbor relies on tuition, Harbor Fund contributions, and other fundraising events like the Annual Gala and Auction, to help meet operating costs.  After tuition, the largest source of yearly income is the Harbor Fund, making it vital to our school’s financial health.

Why not increase the tuition if it does not cover all the costs of a Harbor education?

As part of our commitment to making a Harbor education available to qualified students regardless of financial circumstances, the Board of Trustees works to minimize tuition increases.  Raising tuition to meet all costs would mean that many families would be unable to send their children to Harbor.

How much should I/we give?

Only you can decide how much to contribute to Harbor each year, though it is hoped that Harbor families will make our school a philanthropic priority.  We encourage families to consider giving an amount that is meaningful to you.

What if I can only give a little?

Every gift is important, significant and meaningful. Your donation will fund important programs and activities for your child this year. Every gift helps us reach our overall goals and brings us closer to 100% participation. Every contribution to the Harbor Fund helps keep Harbor strong and demonstrates a commitment to our community, and helps our school Take Flight (2015-16 school theme)!

What is the big deal if I don’t give?

Each family must determine if donating to the Harbor Fund is the right choice for them.  By participating in the Harbor Fund, you help the school by showing outsiders that our community is strong and our families believe in our school and early childhood program.  This is an incredibly valuable metric when seeking outside grants and support for The Harbor School.

Is my contribution tax deductible?

Yes.  All gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.  You will receive an acknowledgement letter from Harbor for your tax records.

How can I make a gift?

Gifts to The Harbor School can be made in a variety of ways, including gifts of cash, credit card, matching gifts, bequests, and gifts of securities. Please contact the Business Office with any questions you may have about the campaign or to make a gift.
