Why It Matters

We all know Harbor lays a foundation for children to become confident, kind, and capable learners. If you believe in Harbor’s mission and would like to support more children’s access to our work, please consider a donation to The Harbor School Fund for the Future, which currently helps contribute to need-based tuition assistance awarded each year to 20% of our student body, on average. With your support, we can increase this percentage, and broaden access to our early childhood programs.

During this 50th year, we aim to increase our financial aid capacity to provide more families with the unique opportunity Harbor offers. Please consider supporting this significant goal during this significant year, with a larger donation than the amount you may typically give.

Ways to Support

Without your generous financial support, The Harbor School would not be able to maintain our small class sizes, recruit and retain excellent teachers and provide an enriching academic program and environment. This year, your tax-deductible contributions to the Harbor Fund for the Future support need-based financial aid awarded this year and for the coming years. Our educational program is also supported by funds raised through Parents Association events, including the Book Fair and the Annual Auction and Gala, with targeted gifts during the Raise the Paddle. Professional Development for our expert faculty is enhanced by the special Sunshine Fund, in honor of our former Head of School, Dr. Kendra Sun-Alperin.

The Harbor Fund

If you believe in Harbor’s mission and would like to expand access to our work, please consider a tax-deductible donation to The Harbor School Fund for the Future, which will contribute to need-based tuition assistance awarded this year and in future years. Financial aid supports 20% of our student body, on average. With your help, we can increase this percentage, and broaden access to our unique early childhood programs.

Whether you are a member of The Harbor School community or a supportive member of our broader community, we invite you to join us as we aim to reach our goals.

Harbor School Parents Association

The Harbor School Parents Association (HSPA) is a group of parents and guardians that help enrich the experiences of Harbor students and families.  By sponsoring events and activities throughout the year, the HSPA strengthens and raises funds for the Harbor community.  The HSPA also supports Harbor teachers and administration by coordinating contributions to the Teacher Appreciation Fund for the purchase of holiday and end-of-year gifts, as well as planning other staff appreciation initiatives throughout the year.

Dr. Kendra Sun-Alperin served as The Harbor School’s Head of School for three very short, but remarkable years. Our Harbor community suffered a heartbreaking loss on September 2, 2017, when Kendra passed away after a brave battle with breast cancer.

As a classroom teacher, a mentor, and our Head of School, we will always remember Kendra as having an infectious passion for influencing and shaping the success of young learners.

We are deeply honored that Kendra’s family and the Board of Trustees have created an annual award at The Harbor School in her memory.

The Kendra Sun-Alperin Sunshine Award focuses on an issue near and dear to Kendra’s heart–the idea of a “lifetime of learning.” This annual award will allow one of our faculty or staff members to pursue an extraordinary professional development opportunity that will benefit the school community.

The Sunshine Award is seeded with the generosity of Kendra’s family; it is our hope that the Harbor community will enthusiastically contribute as well, appreciating fully the value to us all.

The Harbor Annual Auction

The Harbor Annual Auction is the major fundraising and social event of the year at The Harbor School. The evening includes silent and live auctions, raffles, and mingling with friends. Put on by PA volunteers, the Auction provides a lively and fun venue in which to raise funds for The Harbor School.

How to Give

Gifts of Cash

Please make checks payable to The Harbor School. Checks should be directed to the attention of the Business Office. Please send to: 11510 Falls Road, Potomac, MD 20854

Matching gifts

Companies often sponsor matching gift programs that enhance their employees’ charitable contributions. When gifts are made, Harbor benefits from the increased donation and the donor often qualifies for a higher giving level. Matching gift forms can be obtained from the employer’s human resources department. A copy of the form should be submitted along with the employee’s contribution.

Gifts of Securities

An outright gift of appreciated securities held for more than one year entitles the donor to an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities. In addition, the donor may avoid a capital gains tax. The tax deduction is the price of the stock on the date of its transfer to Harbor’s account. To donate securities, you will need a Gift of Securities Form, which we can provide.

Please contact Dana Riley.
