The Hero Program
The Harbor School believes that by engaging in meaningful community service from an early age, young children develop a sense of belonging to a greater community and learn the importance of caring for others. Harbor Enjoys Reaching Out (HERO), the HERO Program, was developed to provide students in Preschool through Second Grade with a variety of outreach opportunities to benefit our school as well as local organizations that need help from others.
The following projects are scheduled for the 2007-2008 school year:
- October: Canned Food Drive
- November: Book Drive (in conjunction with the Book Fair)
- January: Coats, Hats and Mittens Drive
- February: 100 Cereal Boxes Drive (in conjunction with 100 days of school)
- May: Campus Clean-up and Planting Project
Each venture provides items that are essential for everyday healthy living. Our young students are able to understand the need for such items and the importance of providing them to others. Through the program, children see firsthand the results of their work, giving them a strong sense of ownership and satisfaction in uniting for a common cause. By engaging in community service projects, our young students begin to develop empathy for all members of society and to develop real-life skills that help them take responsibility for themselves as well as their wider community.
