Music Kids
The Harbor School is excited to announce that Music Kids, an innovative Suzuki-based violin program, will be enhancing The Harbor School’s educational experience by offering violin lessons on-site this year! The program offers a combination of weekly one-on-one lessons and monthly group classes throughout the year to children ages 3 and up.The Music Kids program is designed to be fun and engaging for the students, while at the same time providing them with the high quality instruction parents have come to expect from the acclaimed Suzuki method. Their unique in-school approach is part of the organization’s ongoing effort to provide the wonderful experience of Suzuki-based violin lessons to as many students as possible by making it feasible for busy and/or working parents.
The Harbor School has two violin teachers available for lessons. Allison Smith studied violin with John Arnold and learned fiddle styles from Layla Doherty and Byron Berline in her home state of Oklahoma. She is currently completing an Elementary Education degree at the University of Maryland. She has played on numerous rock recordings for various bands and has composed and performed original music for award-winning films including Making Arrangements and Okie Noodling (PBS). She performed with Eric Sarmiento in the rock band The Pistol Arrows producing a CMJ ranked song and two critically acclaimed albums. She is currently writing a children's album.Nancy Yeung began studying the violin at the age of six in her hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Since that time, Ms. Yeung has participated in masterclasses with artists such as Victor Abramian, Zino Bogachek, Andrew Manze of the Ancient Academy of Music and the Johannes Quartet. Ms. Yeung has also performed at venues such as The Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria, the National Theatre and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In addition having performed with the George Mason University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, she is a member of the Signature String Quartet and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. She recently completed work towards her Master’s degree in both violin performance and music education as a Peterson Scholarship recipient. Ms. Yeung currently studied conducting with Professor Anthony Maiello and the violin under Peter Haase of the National Symphony Orchestra.
