Daniel Pink at The Harbor School

As part of our commitment to “a lifetime of learning” for our entire community, The Harbor School welcomed Daniel Pink, best-selling author of A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future, to speak at Harbor last Wednesday evening.

This inspiring evening was shared with over 250 friends of Harbor including educators and administrators from other independent and public schools in the area, as well as our Harbor faculty, staff, parents, alumni families, Board of Trustees members, and prospective parents. Mr. Pink’s lively discussion regarding his vision of how we as parents and educators might begin to think about teaching our 21st century children was engaging, thought provoking, and very entertaining.

One of the many highlights of the evening was Mr. Pink’s illustration of his own capacity to develop right brain activity by sharing two versions of self portraits he drew, one pre- and one post-art class instruction that he enrolled in for one week. It was incredible to see the improvements once the right brain had been engaged.

According to Mr. Pink, we are moving from the information age into the “conceptual age”. He identifies six “senses” as crucial to success in this new age: design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning. He urged teaching to the individual child and celebrating their uniqueness, making continued reference to how Harbor was one of the few schools already doing this, and that we should be commended.  But, as Mr. Pink pointed out, we only go through 2nd grade.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our generous contributors to The Marti Jacobs Fund for Professional Development who helped to underwrite this very special event and hope that those of you who were able to join us enjoyed this evening as much as we did.
